It still irritates me that when Charles and Diana visited the White House for a State Dinner, Nancy Reagan re-wore her second Inaugural Gown - and was praised for it by the sycophants of the era, like Liz Smith.
It seems self-consciously lazy. Why do such a thing? Can you imagine the outrage if Hillary Clinton or Jill Biden did that today? It was annoying to me then and it annoys me now.

She was doing what we'd called "branding" these days. She wore expensive gowns, got criticized for it, so made fun of herself and the criticism by performing "Second-Hand Rose" at a DC event, garnering her all sorts of praise from the compliant media.
From that point on, she re-wore gowns to prove just how relatable and down-to-earth she was.

Nancy went through periods when she was under withering criticism for her expensive clothes, so she would have to make the occasional bombastic display of frugality. As soon as things calmed down, she went back to her old excesses. Like when she was told she was in violation of income tax rules for “borrowing” designer creations for free and then “returning” them after one use (and not declaring their value on her taxes). That was about a 2 news cycle scandal. After it died down, it was discovered that she was doing it again! Her spokesperson made what I consider to be one of the greatest non-confessions of regret I have ever heard: “Mrs. Reagan made her little rule [to stop borrowing designer dresses] and she broke her little rule.”

Nan was known as the BJ Queen of Hollywood. Prince Charles thought he might have a chance. Nan knew he might cause an international scene, which would embarrass Ronnie. Diana hated the Reagans. The President screwed up during his remarks at the dinner and called her “Princess David,” then “Princess Diane.”
The royal family couldn’t stand Nancy Reagan and thought she was an obvious American. She showed up in England in 1981 for the wedding with more security and attendants than the Queen.
She was invited to one of Charles’ polo games and showed ip with a large motorcade, in heels which sunk into the mud while the Queen came to the same event driving an old station wagon and wearing a babushka.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 10, 2022 5:15 PM |
Why would she be expected to own another high quality dress? The Reagans were not rich until after Ronnie left office and he charged an arm and a leg for speaking engagements.
That was part of the problem when she was in office--because she had champagne tastes but they could only afford rosé, she kept borrowing dresses loaned to her and not returning them and got in a lot of trouble.

My favorite Nancy Reagan story was from her stepson, Michael Reagan. He came to live with his father and stepmother as a teen. Kids Patti and Ron Jr. had their own rooms. Michael had to sleep on a couch in the den. Then he noticed Nancy and his dad planning a new addition of one room. He assumed it was for him. But it was an extra room for Nancy, and he continued to sleep on the couch in the den.

Nancy had a regifting closet at the White House full of all the crap she had been given over the years that wasn’t good enough for her, which she would give to others.
Michael Reagan visited the White House and his toddler son’s teddy bear was left behind. It was put in the closet and given back to the grandson as his Christmas present that year.
The Reagans stayed at the Waldorf Astoria when they went to New York. The first time they stayed there, the manager put jelly beans (Reagan’s favorite candy) in a Baccarat crystal jar.
Nancy was on her to see Ron Jr., who had just eloped. Realizing she hadn’t purchased a wedding gift, she took the Baccarat jar and gave it to them as a wedding gift. After that, the hotel only used plastic for the Reagans.

Nancy Reagan and her affinity for Adolfo & Galanos was a huge deal in the early ‘80s. We had just come off the casual 1970s and Rosalynn, Betty, Pat, and Lady Bird had not been glamorous. Jackie of course was glamorous but she was also youthful and approachable (during the administration) and her vitality and taste was reflected in her wardrobe. The press also loved her.
Nancy, meanwhile, was old (60) and a snob. The press despised her and knew her back story. Nancy was incredibly phony and thirsty, dating back to her early childhood when her mother married up, to the doctor who would later adopt Nancy.

Say what you want about the Reagan’s politics, but they had class. Nancy knew how to entertain, and she knew how to dress. I know that Jill Biden, and Michelle Obama were more modern, but still by comparison, Nancy had miles more class than either of them, especially when it came to state occasions and formal wear,. Of course, they came from Hollywood. Nancy knew how to do her face, and she knew how to glam up appropriately and that no doubt helped. I think in terms of Presidential majesty, The Reagan’s were the last classic and classy first couple. They weren’t Camelot, but they had their own glittering shining era they reigned over. Who can forget some of those fancy state dinners, Charles and Diana in full drag and the White House decked out? Diana dancing with Travolta in a glittering East Room while princes and presidents and everyone around stepped back and let them have the floor?

R111, the Reagans were the epitome of ZERO class, a word I dislike.
Nancy especially was a climbing grifter. Wearing an expensive "borrowed" gown, does not a chic woman make.
Her treatment of her children, and those she considered beneath her was contemptible. Nancy acted awfully grand for a woman that was pregnant when she trapped Ronnie.
Google some pictures of her decoration of the WH family quarters. The rooms look like someone vomited red.
80s excess at its worst describes them. Not class.

God, I love this thread as much as I despise Nancy.
Yes, I'd read that Nancy's abuse of Patti as a child was so open and so awful that a pal or two from his so-called "kitchen cabinet" took him aside and expressed concerns to him. Ronnie was too much of doofus and by that point so dazzled and reliant on his wife that he brushed them off.
Nancy seemed to harbor a simmering resentment against her daughter from the moment of Patti's difficult birth. Kitty Kelly relays a story (told to her by Patti, IIRC correctly) of how Nancy's blamed her neonate daughter for a difficult, traumatic birth. She claimed that Patti REFUSED to come out by performing the anatomically impossible -- grabbing on to her mother's rib and absolutely refusing to come out. And she held it over her daughter's head for years until Patti was older and figured out her mother was full of shit.
Thank you for posting that article, r109. I was shocked to see it was from 2019. It contains more than 10 paragraphs and goes into some depth -- the type of article People used to run before the '90s. Of course, it's from a promotion for the new biography.

Don't you know that the man who tried to kill Reagan was the son of GHW Bush's friend?
Don't you find it weird that a would be presidential assasin was not only left alive, but was sentenced to an asylum instead of a prison, and was eventually released?
The Reagan assasination was an attempted coup attempt by the vice-president. It failed and Bush's CIA connections kept him "clean."

Oh, yes. What was particularly awful is that it occurred at the same time that the USDA classified ketchup as a vegetable (and pickle relish, too, but that's forgotten) as a budget slashing measure.

My mom, a lifelong Democrat had Nancy's number from when Ronnie was CA governor. Nancy declared the Governor's mansion a firetrap, and had a tacky new place built that looked like a Best Western Plus.
Governor Brown subsequently refused to live in it and I believe it was eventually torn down.
Ron, Nancy, and the entire Kitchen Cabinet were disgusting homophobic trash.
Class! - that poster must be drunk, high, stupid or all three.

Does anyone else but me remember that Joan Rivers considered herself a friend of Nancy's AND gave a tribute to her at the Republican convention!
R117 article. [italic] “The First Lady was a 'mommy dearest' who popped sedatives like candy and started viciously slapping Patti around - in the face, head and ears - at age eight, a practice that continued daily for years” [/italic]
Patti’s face was slapped. Viciously.
r119 Nancy's blamed her neonate daughter for a difficult, traumatic birth. She claimed that Patti REFUSED to come out
The baby was psychic and knew what awaited her.

Interesting that neither of the bio kids had children.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | December 11, 2022 7:27 AM |
I'm thrilled that the kids were able to sell the house after Nancy died for $15 million. They earned every penny.
At least it wasn't a "for reasons well known to them".
I'd kove to take a steaming dump on her grave.

Probably still had Prince Phillip stains somewhere on it.

Nancy was such a cold and nasty woman.

"The statue of Liberty has AIDS. They don't know if she got it from the mouth of the Hudson or the Staten Island ferry". A Bob Hope joke (another pig).
Nancy, Ronnie and that entire group considered this humor.

Nancy did not showcase her FUPA (the moron that said that is... well... a moron). She has a little pot belly, not a FUPA.

Native Sacramentan here. R124 - my whole family was like your mom. They had her number, too. As a little kid my father and uncle would drive me by their Fabulous Forties mansion and say "that's where those Reagans live". My uncle co-owned a popular restaurant restaurant frequented by legislators and other political people and he heard scuttlebutt. It wasn't about the mansion on 16th and I being a firetrap. It was about living too close to undesirables.
Sacramento's old skid row was slowly demolished and I-5 was constructed over it in the late '60s/early '70s, so the cheap SROs were gone. People were displaced and moved to areas within a short walking distance to the mansion, some only three or four blocks away. Ironically, Reagan's funding cuts as president eliminated many, if not most, SROs and owners sold the buildings to developers, causing the initial wave of homeless mentally ill whose SSI checks couldn't cover rents elsewhere. God, I loathed the Reagans.
Fun fact -- Nancy gleefully mocked the former First Lady, Bernice Brown (Jerry’s mom and a Berkeley grad at 19) as tacky when she found the toenails of a clawed bathtub in the mansion painted red. She didn't stop to think the preteen daughter might have done.
Your description of the new mansion as a Best Western Plus is spot on. Nearly everyone hated it. It must have mortified Nancy who took a hands-on approach through all phases, or so it was reported. Interestingly, there are only three or four pictures online. It's that bad.

Dressing up in expensive clothing that you did not pay for doesn't make you classy.

Reagan owed everything to his wife's family - he switched political parties because I'm sure they promised to get their rich friends behind him. Which did happen. His adoration of her was apparently genuine but it also had a lot to do with how good a match it was for him, at a time when his career was going down the toilet. Ronnie also sold out the actors of SAG when he was President of the guild - a long story, but he lost them their residuals, at a time every old movie was starting to show up on TV.
He made a deal with MCA (Lew Wasserman) that circumvented a rule that said talent agencies couldn't go into production. MCA did a lot for him in return. In the early 60s when he was called before Congress to testify about the sahdy, illegal deal, he conveniently couldn't remember anything despite heavy questioning that got downright snide.. You can read about it - he was a real weasel long before he was ever Governor, or President.

R135, great post. I found a picture of Nancy's monstrosity online- it was sold, not torn down and as ugly as I remembered.
All that's missing is an attached Denny's.

I was never a fan of Nancy Reagan, but I give her credit for recognizing Michael Reagan as the gross, creepy loser he was and treating him accordingly. So there was that about her.

Their White House bedroom with the birds attacking wallpaper was bizarre.

R145 Well she could have just not lived with him. If you're taking care of children and teens you shouldn't be giving them an inferiority complex when their worst crime is being the offspring of your husband and his ex-wife. But maybe that's just me.

R111 I remember watching that Diana and Charles dinner on the news. I watched it alone on a TV in the cafeteria at Beth Israel Hospital where my BF was very ill with his first pneumonia because of AIDS. He had pneumonia 3 more times before he died the next spring. We often talked about the classy Ron and Nancy and what an inspiration they were to us in this dark hour of sadness, fear and death. I'm sure it was their good leadership, empathy, shining character and glittering Hollywood class that gave my bf the strength to stay alive those months.

by Anonymous | reply 153 | December 18, 2022 1:34 PM |
No-one believes me that we hated Ron and Nancy for their ostentatious, murderous and vile lack of empathy and support? R111 can die in a a THOUSAND grease fires for his appalling troll on a gay site. Or are you blind to my scathing sarcasm, R153?
by Anonymous | reply 154 | December 18, 2022 1:41 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 156 | December 18, 2022 10:51 PM |

Maureen and Michael Reagan never stood a chance with that wimp as their father and a ball-busting cunt mother and ball-busting cunt stepmother.
This is how Nancy revealed Michael’s true parentage to him as a teenager .She’s no Carol Brady. From the Kitty Kelley book:
“When Nancy got ahold of my bad report card, she verbally ripped into me, concluding with, ‘You’re not living up to the Reagan name or image, and unless you start shaping up, it would be best for you to change your name and leave the house,’” he said.
“‘Fine,’ I said, ‘why don’t you just tell me the name I was born with so at least when I walk out the door I’ll know what name to use.’
“‘Okay, Mr. Reagan, I’ll do just that.’”
A week later, Nancy confronted her stepson with the information that his given name was John I. Flaugher and that he was born out of wedlock, his father an army sergeant who went overseas and never returned.
Michael said he was rocked by the heartless way he received the news, especially from a woman who had been abandoned as a child and later adopted. “I guess I expected Nancy to be more sympathetic,” he said years later.”
